As soon as the first hint of spring arrives, it's important to start making your to-do list and stocking up on all the essentials for a complete floor-to-ceiling spring clean. To make this year's deep clean your most productive yet, we've rounded up some of the top spring cleaning tips of all time. These tips and methods are sure to save you time and get every inch of your home impossibly clean!
1. Make a schedule
Utilize those organizing skills before you even start cleaning! Check out your home. Which rooms need some serious work? Are there any places that you skip during routine cleaning; can't forget it during spring cleaning. Those will probably be good places to start. Regardless of where you start, having a schedule will greatly improve your efficiency when it comes to spring cleaning this year.
2. Start at the top and work to the bottom
Always work from the ceiling down to the floor. It doesn't make sense if you're just going to swipe messes from countertops or ceiling fans onto your floor after you've just vacuumed, mopped or swept. However, it does make sense to let the dust pile on your hardwood floors if you're about to vacuum it anyway. This is why you want to start from the top and work your way down to the bottom.
3. Tidy up the untidy
Tidying up and organizing your house can make you more efficient as well as keeping you organized. But even on a deeper scale, clutter has negative psychological effects. It tells your brain that there's still work to be done, which is never great. It's tough to feel relaxed when you think there's always something else that has to be completed. That's why it's best to get the areas you may think are fine but are really causing some stress in your life. They can include areas like your closets, your office and those dreaded junk drawers. Stacks of paper that are piled close in the back do not represent an organized area of your house! If you do happen to remove those things, you may be surprised how anxiety-free you feel.
4. Don't forget to clean your walls and windows
We tend to think spring cleaning is just for removing old junk and tidying the things you're now finally tired of looking at from the winter. But this isn't true. It's not enough to sweep and mop the floors, or to genuinely clean the couch. The walls need scrubbing and windows could use some cleaning, too. Just use a damp towel to wipe down walls and blinds (starting from the top).
5. Check your air filters
This is actually a big one. Dust is a nasty allergen. It's one of the main reasons cleaning is so important. So it's VERY important to remember to replace filters for air conditioners. In fact, replacing a standard filter will help keep you healthier as you enter spring. You certainly don't want your AC blowing dirty air onto you as the temperature starts to heat up. Make sure you check every filter to all of your AC units in the house. It'll keep the family safer and healthier.
6. Don't make it an all-day event
Last but not least, cleaning, especially Spring Cleaning, can be very overwhelming. Instead, set aside a specific time each day for household tasks to be done. This doesn't need to be one gigantic daunting task that looms over your head or takes up an entire weekend. If it works best for your mental health, break it down into smaller duties that you accomplish throughout the day.
